A wind-driven wildfire in Southern California forced thousands to evacuate their homes as it threatened suburban areas near Los Angeles.

Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate as a wind-driven wildfire threatened suburban homes in Southern California on Monday. The Sandy Fire was reported around 10am in hills above Simi Valley, about 30 miles (48 kilometres) northwest of Los Angeles.
