In a national effort to improve waste management, 143 municipalities in Mexico lack a basic service of urban waste collection. Residents are resorting to informal methods such as burning, organic waste dumping on agricultural land, burying, and dumping at open-air landfills. This raises concerns about environmental and public health impacts.
