OpenAI has released benchmarks for its first custom AI processor, named Jalapeño, which reportedly runs models like DeepSeek R1 up to 4.1x faster and with greater energy efficiency than competing hardware. While the chip cannot train models from scratch, it marks a significant step for OpenAI in reducing its reliance on Nvidia infrastructure.
