Demis Hassabis has stepped away from day-to-day management of Google DeepMind to become Alphabet's chief scientist and chairman, with Koray Kavukcuoglu taking over operational control. Meanwhile, long-time chief scientist Jeff Dean has left after 27 years to launch a new startup called Discovery Loop alongside several top researchers.
