Welcome to The Pesky Toad. You might be wondering how all this local Baja Sur news, weather, and ridiculous satire magically appears on your screen every day.
A Local Perspective
This project is proudly built, maintained, and curated by a retired US citizen and Mexican resident living right here in El Pescadero, BCS. We know the challenge of keeping up with local news from various sources across Los Cabos, La Paz, and Todos Santos while dodging the tourist noise. That's why The Pesky Toad was born.
The Technology (How It Works)
To bring you timely and translated updates, we use a modern and private technology stack, meaning it's fast, secure, and independent:
- Local AI with Ollama: We run advanced AI models locally to read, summarize, translate, and score news. By keeping it local, we ensure privacy and avoid the sanitized, "bland" output often found in big commercial AI clouds. We like our AI with a little bit of sass.
- FastAPI & Python: Our robust backend constantly scrapes, processes, and evaluates stories 24/7. It filters out the noise and leaves you with the news that actually affects your day.
- Human Curation: The code does the heavy lifting, but the tone, categories, and ultimate direction of the site are 100% human-guided.
Why the Satire?
Life in Baja is beautiful, but it can also be incredibly absurd. Sometimes you have to laugh at the power outages, the wandering cows, and the endless "maรฑana". We collect the best satire from across the web, and occasionally generate our own "Pesky Toad Originals", to keep things balanced.
We're glad you're here. Stay wet, stay wild, and keep it pesky!
